Fruccola

In collaboration with the local green restaurant Fruccola, we created the Fruccola Bird hot food vending machine and Fruccola Bar smart cooler to reflect the changing consumption habits caused by the pandemic. The revolutionised idea won the Red Dot Design Award in the Brand and Communication category in 2023.

The story

Fruccola is one of the oldest green restaurant chains in Budapest. And they are not only green in the sense that they serve a lot of vegetables, but also in other ways as they strive to be environmentally friendly. They offer healthy meals, Meatless Monday, freestyle salad picking, battery and light bulb collection, and even Fruccola paper bags are worth 20 HUF if you return them the next time. Breakfast, lunch and snack – you can drop by a Fruccola restaurant on any of these occasions. You can order healthy meals, salads, sandwiches, hot meals, soups, desserts and juices. Wide range of vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free and flour-free options. They work with a number of organic farms. They use many local ingredients and environmentally friendly packaging. Their bottles are collected and reused. To adapt to changing food ordering and consumer habits, they have developed a smart fridge and Bird, a smart automated mini refrigerator with our participation.

The details

We were responsible for concepts, product development and production management. Both developments presented our designers with interesting professional challenges. For the concept of the office smart fridge, we took into account that the fridge becomes a kind of gathering point in the community space, during lunch and meal times, such dedicated spaces allow staff to gather and an impromptu community life is created on site. So we redesigned the shape of the fridge and added extra community-building features to the side walls. We’ve also used fabric, which further refines the cool, cold fridge placed in office spaces.

For the BIRD, the concept was to create an interior to organise space, so that the dedicated elements could be transformed into a slightly private space, for example, when placed in a shopping centre, school, large community space. The large frame provides a little intimacy while the food is being selected and warmed, and from the outside the mirrored surface blends the cube into the interior. For both products, the Fruccola brand is strongly built, with strong and sophisticated graphics. Our company was responsible for the design and production.
